Here are scans of the original artwork for the lyric sheet included in the Beelzebubba record album. You can click on the image here for an even larger (almost full size) version that will open in a new browser window. Joe wrote out the song lyrics and doodled in the margins. Update: Joe says Rodney also contributed to the illustrations - thanks guys!

Does the Japanese in the ‘Smoking Banana Peels’ lyrics actually say anything?

Yes Sutter - I’d be interested to know too. Joe?
FYI - that P.O. box is no longer valid. We had that for many years (15?) - located in the post office underground at the 15th street El station.

In Punk Rock Girl, “… a walk to zipperhead”, its too bad that it is closed now. There is a new store around the corner called ‘Crash Bang Boom!’. I believe it is still run by the same owners of Zipperhead though. Punk Rock Girl is a great song. I never understood what a beau was. As in, “… and said do you have a beau?”. Would you mind telling me what it means?

“Beau” means boyfriend….in France. Man - they have a freakin’ different word for everything over there! Sheesh!

Thanks for that Dean. I also forgot to say that i love the lyrics in these songs because some of them have to do with Philadelphia. (I am a resident of Philadelphia thats why). Like “Philly Pizza Co.” and “… on channel 57″ (i believe we are we the only people that have channel 57? UPN i believe?). And ofcourse as i mentioned before … Zipperhead.

But in the video for PRG, they show the pizza place down the block and accross the street from the Philly Pizza Company (which is now a starbucks).

I often cover “Punk Rock Girl” when I’m playing solo shows at bars in the Philly suburbs. I once had a guy come up and take me to task for the lyrics by telling me in all seriousness that “California Dreamin’” was by the Mamas and Papas and not the Beach Boys. While I certainly knew that, I thought that was funny that the guy was that worked up about it.

Michael,
We STILL get email asking us about that. “Did you know “California Dreamin” was by…blah, blah, blah…). It seems a lot of folks are worked up about it!
Where do you play in the ‘burbs? I live in the burbs. Maybe I’ll come out an see you play it someday?

Dean - I just sent you some info via the contact page on your personal website. Best, Michael

I sometimes play Punk Rock Girl at my solo shows too and people have come up to me afterwards to tell me that California Dreamin is not a Beach Boys song.
But.. it is!

I know that it is originally a Mamas and Papas song, but at the time that I wrote them, the Beach Boys had just had a top 40-ish (now forgotten) hit with their cover of the song. (This was the mid-80s.) It was in juke boxes (the Beach Boys version) and on the radio. I heard the Beach Boys version quite a lot on the radio, in fact, in the blue hospital ambulance van during the Eat Your Paisley-era tours.
I don’t understand why people get so worked up about this. Don’t people say that “Ring of Fire” is a Johnny Cash song, even though June Carter wrote it with Merle Kilgard (and also recorded it, later)? (June Carter’s sister, Anita, was the first to record the song.)
Yes, I know. The Mamas and the Papas recorded the ultimate version of “California Dreamin’” and it will always be considered their song, and not the Beach Boys’.
Basically, The Beach Boys name fit better in the lyrics and I wanted to quote “On such a winter’s day” in the lyric… plus, The Beach Boys version was the MODERN one and more likely to have been playing in a jukebox (then, not now).

Mister Joe Jack, I would like to sincerely thank you for clearing that up and allowing me to bring closure to a loose thread in my brain that’s been hanging for entirely too long.
I’ll admit, when I first heard “Punk Rock Girl” that I was one of those very same wankers. Although upon a second listen, I buried my concern deep down where it could be ignored (or sit and fester, not sure which) and just enjoyed the song, not really giving it another thought. Now, it all makes sense.

I’ve been meaning to ask, is the lying RC in “Where the Tarantula Lives” the same one as “RC’s Mom?”
Been listening for years. All the best.
